New Library Home Page

The University Library has a new home page. Here are the biggest changes, to help you orient yourself.

Tabbed Search Box – We've made it easier to start your research. You can now search the library's catalog and website, as well as Google Scholar and other resources, from one centralized location. Just click the relevant tab to access the different search bars.

Cleaner Layout – We've streamlined the website, removing unnecessary design aspects until all that's left is what needs to be there: the content you need to help you with your research.

More Links – Although our design is minimalist, we've increased the amount of information on the home page. You can now access more pages with one click, reducing the amount of time spent trying to find what you need.

Dropdown Menu – We've added a dropdown menu to the home page with direct links to important and frequently visited pages. It's now easier to find department web pages, information on the library, and research materials.

Easier to Understand – We've tried to remove some of the library jargon from our web page, so that our links are more intuitive and easier to understand.

Social Media Links – The library is now on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. We've added links to these social media services at the top of our home page, so you can easily keep abreast of library news, announcements, and other information in realtime.

Spring Semester Hours

Notice of Network Downtime in Library

Due to an IT project which will upgrade the network switches in the university library buildings, we regret that there will be limited computer access on Friday, December 16th and Monday, December 19th. This includes Internet, Printing, and the ability to log on to computers on some floors.

Please see the chart below for full details:

Plan your work accordingly and make other arrangements while the network/internet is unavailable.

Also note that if you are already logged onto your computer you can use the local resources. You may not be able to log on after the switch is taken off line.

Extended hours for Final Exams

The library will be open until 10PM Monday through Thursday between the dates of 12/05/2011 and 12/15/2011 to assist students with studying for final exams.

We will be open regular hours both Fridays and the Saturday of 12/10/2011, but we will be closed on Saturday the 17th.

Dr. Hata will speak on the issues raised in the fourth edition of his book, “Japanese Americans and World War II

— Mass Removal, Imprisonment, and Redress” (with Nadine Ishitani Hata) as well as issues in the “Building Evidence” exhibition in the Archives.

The exhibit, described below, will be on display until March 2012.

For over 40 years historians and archivists at CSU Dominguez Hills have been gathering materials documenting the lives of Japanese Americans in the South Bay and Los Angeles. A large segment of material focuses on the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, but there is also material on Japanese Americans before and after the War.

Consisting of photographs, yearbooks, artwork, letters, leases, the exhibition focuses on the lives and obstacles faced by Japanese Americans in the South Bay and Los Angeles prior, during and after World War II. Topics include the location of some Japanese American tenant farmer families on Dominguez/Rancho San Pedro lands before World War II and the removal of those families after Pearl Harbor; the mass evacuation of citizens and incarceration in concentration camps such as Manzanar and Granada, Colorado; letters from various Japanese Americans searching for jobs and places to live after the camps were closed. Several of the recently-rescued Ninomiya Studio photographs show Japanese American life in the 1950s. In addition the exhibition features artwork of Mary Higuchi, Henry Fukahara and H. Takata as well as a scale model of a camp barracks made by former Torrance resident Min Sueda.

Student Scholarship Opportunity from TELACU

Business majors (e.g. Business Administration, Economic, Finance, Management, Marketing & International Business) or related field:
* Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
* Low-income, first generation college students
* Must be entering their Junior Year

S.T.E.M. majors (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Emphasis in Mechanical, Electrical & Chemical Engineers):
* Minimum G.P.A. 2.70
* Low-income, first generation college students

New Library Floor Plans

Floor plans for both library buildings (North and South) are now available on the library's floor plans web page. The plans are to scale and show the location of books, offices, and other pertinent features of the library like computers and photocopiers.

You can also download a printable PDF copy of the map on the page, which includes a separate list of the items on each floor.

Laptop Loan Office May/Summer Schedule

Laptop rentals and Group Study room checkouts will be unavailable from May 23rd through May 27th. However, the laptop loan office will still be open from the 23rd through the 25th for the return of equipment.

The office will be closed the 27th through the 30th, and will re-open for laptop and group study room checkouts throughout both summer sessions, from May 31st through August 19th.

PICTURE Art Student Essay Contest - $500 Prize

The PICTURE Art Foundation maintains the PICTURE Cultural Art Center on the first floor of the new CSUDH Library. To celebrate the opening of their new exhibit, "On Being Human: Love, Faith, Shame and Hope," opening May 5th, the foundation is sponsoring a student essay contest with a $500 cash prize for the winning entry. The winning essay will also be featured on the foundation's website, http://www.pictureartfoundation.org.

Contest Details

Write an essay of any length on a piece of art found in the exhibit "On Being Human: Love, Faith, Shame and Hope." The essay should include at least one of the following angles: sociological, historical, cultural, art historical or art appreciation.

Students are required to visit the exhibit to choose a particular work. Outside research is strongly encouraged, especially if it relates to current classwork.

Submit your entries to James Scarborough, PICTURE Cultural Art Executive Director at jscarborough@pictureartfoundation.org.

Contest deadline is May 18th.

USC Libraries Wonderland Award

Are you a fan of Lewis Carroll? If you are, you may want to take note of the USC Libraries Wonderland Award.

The award is is an annual multidisciplinary competition that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), the English logician, mathematician, photographer, and nonsense poet who authored Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass (1871). The contest is open to graduate and undergraduate students from all disciplines at all Southern California universities. Previous winners have included creative writing, journalism, fine art, and biomedical engineering students.

The CSUDH Library has put together a page with available resources on Lewis Carroll and the Alice stories and poems to assist entrants from Dominguez Hills. You can view the page by clicking here: http://library.csudh.edu/info/guides/wonderland/

Mac Lab Now Open

The library's new Mac Lab is now open for student use. This lab contains 12 apple computers loaded with Mac OS X and is located just behind the reference desk on the second floor of the library's south wing.

Lab hours are the same as the library's hours of operation.

Jimi Hendrix exhibition

CSUDH Archives and Special Collections in the University Library presents Jimi Hendrix: “I’ll Meet You in the Next World. Don’t Be Late.” An Exhibition on the life and after-life of Jimi Hendrix.

Perhaps the greatest guitarist in the history of popular music, Hendrix died 40 years ago this September 18.

Including material collected by South Bay Historian James Osborne, as well as materials from the CSUDH Archives, the exhibition will run from August 24 through the December 17, 2010. Included will be vintage posters, magazines, newspapers, programs, and single covers as well as several album covers documenting Hendrix’s career in England, the U.S. and throughout the world.

The Archives is open from 10 to 4 Monday-Friday. Osborne will present a talk on his collection tentatively on September 16 at 3:30 pm and November 17 at 4:30 pm.

New Ebooks added to library catalog

Almost 4500 new e-book titles covering a wide variety of subjects are now available in the library's online catalog. All of these titles are from our ebrary collection, and many of them are recently published books as well.

Now that these books are listed in our catalog, you will be able to find them by doing a regular book search. Accessing e-books is easy: just look for the link titled "An ebrary electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click to view." E-books can also be accessed from off-campus, as described in our off-campus access tutorial.

Asbestos Abatement Project

From July 5^th through the end of August, the 4^th floor of the old library building will be closed as part of the ongoing asbestos removal project. All books located in this part of the library will be completely inaccessible for the duration of the project.

The call numbers and subject headings affected by this closure are:

J (Political Science)

K (Law)

L (Education)

M (Music and Books on Music)

N (Fine Arts)

P - PN (Language and Literature (excepting French, English, American, German literatures))

Call numbers A-H and PQ-Z are unaffected by the project.

If you need a book that falls within the J-PN range, you can:

request the item via Inter-Library Loan by searching for it on WorldCat (important note: ILL can take 1-2 weeks to process and deliver items)
stop by the reference desk on the second floor, and we will try to locate the item in a nearby library for you (important note: you may need to be a member of the library which has the item to access it there)
Search the All CSU Catalog to locate the item in another CSU library, and go to that library in person to check out the item

New Book Locations

As part of the transition into the new library building, periodicals and books with call numbers PR - Z will be inaccessible to library patrons until the 29th of April.

Books with the Call numbers J-PN are shelved in the Book stacks of the North Wing (Cain Library), but have been moved to the 4th floor. These items are still accessible by the public.

Folio (oversize) materials and books with call numbers A-H will remain on the 3rd floor after being redistributed throughout the stacks to take advantage of the additional space. These books may also be unavailable while they are being shifted.

If you need a book which is currently in the South wing or in transit to its new location, please come to the Circulation Desk and fill out a request form. Requested books are searched for once a day and are usually available within 2 Business days from the time of request.

Retrieved books will be held on the hold shelf for one week.

Library Web Services Downtime

Starting Friday (3/26) at 6:00 PM to Sunday (3/28), some of the services on the Library website might not be available or fully functional. This is due to the Chancellor's Office’s relocation of computer servers which provide search functionality to all CSU campuses. Services that might be affected include

The All 23 CSU Library Catalog
Cross-database access to full-text articles located in other databases, such as:
- The "Find it at CSUDH Lib" button
- The "Click HERE to to get a copy from CSUDH Library, Or make an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Request." Button
The Inter-Library Loan form's auto-population features.
Access to our article databases through Google Scholar

Note that full text access to articles will still be available during this time if they are in the database you are currently searching. You may experience difficulty switching between databases in your search, however.

Library Renovation Project

Beginning Tuesday, March 2 through April 29, the second floor of the library building will be undergoing renovation. During this time, some library services will be limited or relocated. We apologize for the inconvenience to our users, and thank you for your patience as we prepare newer and better facilities.

The following services will be impacted during these dates:

• Computers – Regrettably, computer access in the library will be limited to 26 computers. These computers are located in the Internet Café and the Instruction Lab (A213). The reference area computers on the second floor will not be available. Please plan to use the Welch Hall or Instructional Media Center computer labs during the renovation process. Printing will still be available.

• Seating – Second floor seating will be unavailable. Please use the third and fourth floors of the library during this period.

• Reference – The reference desk will be relocated to the opposite side of the second floor, next to the circulation desk.

• Information Desk – The information desk will be relocated to the Instruction Lab.

2010 Winter Session

ILLiad system announced

Starting from Monday, October 19, 2009, the University Library will be implementing a new ILL (Inter-Library Loan) system, which will replace the current ILL program.

Why:
The new ILL system is more automated and the turn-around service time will be much shorter. It also allows library users to check the status of their currently checked-out ILL items, as well as the status of in-progress loans (e.g. “Your item shipped yesterday”), and other useful features.

When:
Starting from Monday, October 19, 2009, we will gradually migrate to the new ILL system. Some of the ILL request links will be directed to the new system.

What changes to expect:
- The new system will ask you to log in using your MYCSUDH account.
- The new system will also ask first time users to fill out a patron information form. This form will help the library build an ILLIad Patron database. The patron information will only be asked for once.
- The system request form will also ask for an ISBN or ISSN number.

What is ILL?
For those of you who might not know:
If the library does not have what you need (books or articles) for your assignments and research, the Library can probably get it for you. This service is called ILL (Inter-Library Loan). The ILL service is limited to currently registered students, faculty, emeriti faculty, and staff.

Library Hours for Fall Semester 09

During the upcoming Fall semester, the library will be open until 8PM Monday through Thursday.

Except for days when the campus is closed due to holidays or furloughs (as listed on the CSUDH Academic Calendar) the library's schedule will be as follows:

Monday - Thursday: 8:00AM - 8:00PM

Friday: 8:00AM - 5:00PM

Saturday - 11:00AM - 3:00PM

Sunday: Closed

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this reduction of hours, which is a direct consequence of the CSU system-wide budget cuts implemented by the government of California.

Library Closed for State Furloughs

The library will be closed for state furlough days on Friday August 14th and Friday August 21st this month. The rest of campus will also be closed on those days.

These closures are due to a state-wide furlough of CSU employees, much like the ones already suffered by other state employees. Note that the CSU system will only be implementing two furlough days per month, however, and not three per month.

In addition, in order to continue to serve students to the furthest extent possible, Dominguez Hills will be implementing staggered furlough days in most months. What this means is that the campus will remain open as only half of the faculty and staff will be absent on any given furlough day. Please see the library website for a full list of our August hours.

A calendar of furlough days (subject to finalization from the President's office) follows:

August 2009: Campus closed on Friday August 14th and Friday August 21st

September 2009: Half of employees gone on Friday September 4th, Tuesday September 8th, Friday September 18th and Monday September 21st.

October 2009: Half of employees gone on Friday October 2nd, Monday October 5th, Friday October 16th and Monday October 19th.

November 2009: Half of employees gone on Friday November 6th and Monday November 9th, Campus closed on Friday November 27th.

December 2009: Half of employees gone on Friday December 4th and Monday December 7th, Campus closed on Thursday December 24th.

Log in with your campus username!

Starting on Monday June 22nd, the CSUDH library will be changing its off-campus login procedures.

You will now be able to log in with the same login information and password that you use for Blackboard, campus e-mail, and to log in to the computers around campus. This will make it easier to log in, as you will no longer have to use your 9-digit ID number to access your patron record and our electronic databases.

If you are a non-affiliated library patron and do not have this login and password, you will still be able to access our site as before by using your library ID number and last name.

If you do not know what your campus username and password are, you can find them through MyCSUDH by using the following link: http://my.csudh.edu (The links are located about halfway down the left-hand side of the page, labeled "forgot your password?" and "forgot your username?"

If you are unable to retrieve your username and password using the MyCSUDH system, or if your username and password do not allow you to log in, please contact the IT Help Desk at (310) 243-2500 for further assistance. Help Desk hours are Monday through Friday, 8am through 6pm

Mandatory Logins on Library Public Computers

Starting on Wednesday, June 17th, computers in the library will require users to log in with their campus username and password to get access. The process will be a phased one, and is set to be completed on Monday, June 22nd. The campus username and password are the same ones used to log in to Blackboard, campus e-mail, and the computers in Welch Hall and other parts of campus.

This change will affect all public computers located near the reference desk on the second floor of the library. Our 4 handicapped-accessible computers, located between the reference desk and the library entrance, will be included in the switch. However, the library will maintain 5 public access computers that do not need a login. These are the computers located opposite the circulation desk. This will enable us to continue to serve those members of our community who use the Dominguez Hills library.

We respectfully ask that students, faculty, staff, and others with a Dominguez Hills ID and password not use these public-access computers, as they are intended for members of the general public.

If you do not know what your campus username and password are, you can find them through MyCSUDH by using the following link: https://my.csudh.edu/psp/pdhprd/EMPLOYEE/EMPL/h/?tab=PAPP_GUEST (The links are located about halfway down the left-hand side of the page, labeled "forgot your password?" and "forgot your username?"

If you are unable to retrieve your username and password using the MyCSUDH system, please contact the IT Help Desk at (310) 243-2500 for further assistance. Help Desk hours are Monday through Friday, 8am through 6pm

Library Construction Noise

There will be considerable noise from construction on all floors of the library building for the next few weeks, as the new library construction project is being connected to the existing building.

In order to connect the two buildings, walls along the South face of the library will be demolished over the next few weeks. There is likely to be a lot of noise from this, and we apologize to all students, faculty, staff and others who use the library.

Parts of the stacks on floors three and four are also affected by this process, as shelves nearest to the walls had to be emptied and removed in order to safely demolish the walls and to build temporary walls.

There should be no dust or other debris throughout the process, as temporary walls will have been constructed along the South walls to prevent the demolition from unduly affecting library patrons.

Please direct any inquiries or comments about the process to Adele Vanarsdale of Facilities Planning and Construction Management at (310) 243-3826. Her office horus are 8-5 Monday through Friday.

If you need help finding a book in the affected parts of the library stacks, please go to the Circulation desk for assistance. The Circulation desk is open during all library hours, and closes 15 minutes prior to the libary's closing time. Their phone number is (310) 243-3717.

New CSU-wide Mango catalog announced

The library has a new way to search for books! With the CSU Mango catalog, you can search all CSU libraries at once. This addition to our online repertoire replaces the old CSU Pharos system, and will give you listings of books at any CSU campus, including Dominguez Hills.

The library is planning to implement ILLiad, an Inter-Library Loan service which mimics the point-and-click book request functionality of LINK+, over the summer to ensure that faculty and students can easily request books from other libraries. ILLiad will also help to reduce work load on our understaffed ILL department (which has only one full time employee), so that you can receive your books faster.

For now, go check out the CSU Mango catalog at http://library.calstate.edu/catalog/books/advanced (Select “Dominguez Hills” if you're off campus). We hope that it will help you to find the books you need at a CSU campus. Even though ILLiad is not yet implemented for book requests, you can click the “Find it @ CSUDH Lib” button to go to our Inter-Library Loan page and put in a manual request for a book you need.

LINK+ Cancellation Announced

Please note that as of May 1, 2009, the library will no longer be subscribing to the LINK+ inter-library loan service. This unfortunate cut is due to the library’s—and the CSU system’s—current budget situation.

This means that May 1, 2009 is the last day that you will be able to place a request for any LINK+ materials. After that date, all inter-library loan requests must be processed through the library website’s ILL page, located here: http://library.csudh.edu/services/ILL/ The standard ILL service takes longer than LINK+ (anywhere between 10 and 14 working days), so keep this in mind when requesting materials from other libraries.

We apologize for any inconvenience the cancellation of the LINK+ service may cause, and thank you for using the library.

Important announcement about login IDs

To All faculty, staff and students:

Please note that you can no longer log in to library services from off-campus using your Social Security Number.

Please use ONLY the barcode ID number on your student or faculty/staff ID card to log in to the Library system in order to renew your books online and remotely access the Library’s resource. When reading ebooks, searching article databases, and downloading full-text journal articles, etc., from off-campus you will need to use this ID number.

If you are not sure about your barcode ID number, or if it is not on your ID card, please call the IT Help Desk at 310-243-2500 for help.

What is my barcode ID number?

Your barcode ID number is the 14-digit number on your ID card. It is the number 20550 followed by your 9-digit ID number. This number is printed at the very bottom of the ID card on all new IDs.

(please do not use spaces, dashes or hyphens).

New Ways to Search

We've added a few new ways for you to search for books and articles at the CSUDH library.

The first of these is Google Scholar, which you can use to search for journal articles from a number of journals. Once you associate your web browser with our library (under "scholar preferences" from the main Google Scholar page), you can click the search results to go right into our databases!

The second new search method is WorldCat. WorldCat lets you find books and articles not only in our own library, but in libraries around the world. While you may not ever need to know that the Koninklijke Bibliotheek has a copy of Le Petit Prince, this tool can help you find textbooks and other research materials in libraries around the Los Angeles area instead of just here at CSUDH. This can be useful if we don't have a book you need and you don't want to wait for inter-library loan.

Wondering what new books we have?

Wonder no more! The New Books page can tell you just that!

The page contains a list of all the books that the library has recently acquired, and is updated once every 3-4 months. The current version of the page shows all the books that we acquired between November of 2007 and July of 2008.

You can browse the new books by subject area or alphabetically by title, and you can also search the list for words in the title or for the name of your favourite author.

Remember that you can always see our newest books by coming to the library in person and taking a look at our New Books shelf, located opposite the reference desk right inside the library's entrance.

New look for library web page!

There has been an overhaul of the library's website, and the results are as you see them. If you have any comments about the new look, or input on how we can continue to improve the page, please comment on our blog and let us know, or send an e-mail to the library webmaster.

Biggest changes

The front page has several "tabs". You can click these to see links that will help you:
- Do your assignments
- Learn about the library
- Check out services the library offers.
You can now see what time the library is open on the front page. There is also a calendar showing our hours a few months in advance.

You can now search for books from the main library page. Doing so will take you into our online catalogue.

Library announcements will be posted on the front page instead of in semi-annual newsletters. You can see older announcements here at our blog

We now have a collection of "Frequently Asked Questions." If you have a question about something in the library, check it out before you send an e-mail asking us for help. The question you have might already be answered!

When you are on any sub-page in the site, you will see navigation back to the main page, and to several relevant sub-pages.

Hopefully, you like the new look, and find it to be useful and easy to use.
